The Battle of the Flowers
Starting the May in Cordoba, as we say, month par excellence of our
city, with the increasingly popular "Battle of the Flowers". As it was previously said this celebration starts on the last Sunday of April. Since this day all the festivals begins, as a preface to all events taking place this expected month by Cordoban people and, increasingly, by tourists from all corners of Spain, and we expect it to be the world people soon.
We don`t know exactly when it took place for the first time or the reasons which led to the creation of this event so unique, but we
know that in other cities of Spain, like Valencia or Laredo (Cantabria) it took place in the end of the XIX century and the beginning of the XX century. On the other hand we know that in other cities the "Battle of Flowers" is celebrated, however, it is difficult to know what is the place that this festival really comes. In our city the first began in the 40s. But it stopped during a lot of years. Then in the middle of the 80s the "Battle of flowers" began again, and since then it has been held continuously until today. .
The Victoria Avenue is the place where it take
s place. More than twenty charriots are gathered, this is the result of effort and dedication of our supporters clubs throughout all the year, and then they are decorated with paper flowers and other typical elements of our city such as the horseshoe arches or Saint Raphael, the custody of our city. The participants dress up with the typical dresses, such as flamenco dress. Also the charriots are dressed up with fleared cloth
and flowers. These people begin "the battle" towards midday, in this moment a cracket bursts and the battle begins. More than 140000 carnations are thrown against tourists and Cordovans, that are flocking to contemplate this peculiar way to start our holidays.
During the battle a band accompanies the battle with music, this year, the turn was to the Santisimo Cristo Del Amor band. This band belongs to the Cerro Section. Behind the parade there is the F
ederation of folk group car, which is responsable of the event. Behind it there are fifteen more charriots, many of them of Linares and Santo Domingo Pilgrimages, celebrated the two last Sundays of April. Closes the parade the charriot with the Official Beauties of the Cordovan Spring.
During two hours the charriots make a stroll around the Victoria Avenue, recreating a special ambiance and singing the famous "Soy Cordobes" by Rodrigo, and keeping the ambiance full of colours that only our city can give.
Near the parade there is the Authorities of the city box, like political people or the federation of folk group and the authorities that also take part in the battle and they enjoy the beginning of the festivities of May.
