Saint Francis and Saint Eulogius: History

        The current Saint Francis and Saint Eulogius Church was founded by Ferdinand IIIEntrance arch to Compás of Saint Francis, the Saint, as Saint Peter the Royal Monastery, being considered Historic Artistic Monument since 1981. This Monastery belonged to Saint Nicolas of the Ajerquia section and was situated next to the walls that linked this to the city. It was a sparsely inhabited area at the moment, but the presence of the monastery would be conducive to the recruitment sector.
        During Middle, the section where it was situated was a section full of handcrafts, and the few buildings were destined to these jobs: workshops, shops, taverns...
        Since 1123, opposite the monastery was one of the entrances was closed into the walls that linked the Medina with the central section. This entrance was named in differentMain façade of the church ways, as the Descalzos Entrance in reconquest period or Portillo de Corvache a the end of the XVIII Century, Portillo of Saint Francis in the XV Century or Gate of the Merchants in the XVIII Century. Actually this place is known as Arch of the Portillo.
        Originally, the monastery occupies a large plot of land bounded by the San Francisco, Armas, Maese Luis and fair streets. Even in medieval times, the brothers sold part of the gardens, houses and shops built in its place, moving to a predominantly commercial area.
        Till the XIX Century it was the site of a religious community: the Franciscans. With Ferdinand III the Saint and Alphonse X One of the most interesting images is  the Ecce Homo attributed to "La Roldana"it obtained numerous privileges becoming the most important site of the franciscans. In 1246 the council confirmed one of the city on water privilege they had given by Ferdinand III the Saint. Later, Alphonse X, in this sense give two new privileges: one in 1264 and another in 1266. In time the monastery was gaining importance in the order, even to became the same Mother House. It is known that in the seventeenth century lived here over a hundred brothers, that number rose in the eighteenth century, the period of greatest splendor of it. Lord of Charity
        In the XIX Century the convent disappeared because the french abolished the religious orders in 1810. In 1842, the house of Saint Peter the Royal is sold to Don Bonifacio Gallego Campos, so only the church is kept till our days.
        The church just keeps some remnants of what was Church of the Saint Peter the Royal Monastery, because of the many changes it has undergone, they are described in the section concerning the description of the building.
        Nowadays the Saint Francis and Saint Eulogius Church is one of the most representative religious buildings of the city. Many chapels and altars of worship are there. On the other hand, it is one of the few churches that has the privilege of having two brotherhoods: The Charity and Prayer of the Garden.
