As its name suggests, the next section will discuss the various chapels and
altars that the Saint Peter Church harbors, as well as paintings, sculptures and other items of value that they deserve to be highlighted.
In the Evangelis Nave we find the Baptism Chapel, founded by the Brotherhood of Blessed Sacrament in the second half of the XVII Century. It has a square and is covered with dome and decorated with plasterwork pendentives Francisco and Pedro Ruiz Paniagua. The entrance is very classical with a triangular pediment. In this room the sculptor Juan de Mesa y Velasco was baptized, figure of the andalusian and spanish baroque imagery of the
seventeenth century.
Next to the Epistol door we find the Saint Joseph Altar, a neoclassical part where there is a polychrome sculpture of Saint Joseph with Jesus Child. You can also spot out a painting of the Martyrdom of Saint Bartholomew.
The Holy Marthyrs Chapel keeps the rests of the first three marthyrs of Córdoba: Faustus, Martial and Januarius. The remains were deposited in the primitive mozarabic church, but in the eighteenth century the chapel was made to find it. The works began in 1742, by Diego de los Reyes, with a squared plan covered by a groin vault. At the entrance you find two statues, by Teodosio
Sánchez Cañadas, and the entrance is made with a roman arch surrounded by gypsum mouldings. The altarpiece, by Alonso Gómez de Sandoval, was made in 1760. It was made in polychromated and golden wooden, characterized by extremely dynamic and effective, perfectly adapted to the layout of the wall. In the middle of it, there is the urn containing the remains of martyrs.
Furthermore, two large paintings, which are located in the side walls of the chapel, and both are surrounded by leafy plasterwork. The first is the Emergence of the five knight to the Father Roelas, a subject closely linked to the Holy Martyrs, as it represents the time it is communicated to the Father Roelas where
he should provide a resting place to them. The second one is the Holy Dinner.
The next room is smaller than the previous one. It has a rib gothic vault whose key is decorated with flowers. A blinded window remembers the time it worked as a chapel, connected with the Holy Martyrs Chapel. A small metal ladder shows access to the original tower, which is not preserved. Through a little niche you reach the Tabernacle, by Juan de Ochoa. It is a rectangular area covered by two domes on pendentives. A room of great simplicity, but with its
unique and quiet beauty.
In the Epistle Apse we can admire the painting of Saint Peter, by Juan de Valdés Leal. Saint Peter is sat looking to the sky from which you can see a light. He has got the keys of the Heaven World and The Terrenal World. It is a youthful work, like the Sain Andrew located in Saint Francis and Saint Eulogius Church, however, mastery of composition, the muted shades ... we suggest later stages of the artist.
In the Evangelis Apse you can admire the images of the Owners of the Brotherhood of Mercifulness, that procession in the evening of Holy Wednesday. The Holy Christ of Mercifulness, anonymous image of the XVI Century, and Our Lady of Tears in her Helplessness, anonymous image of the XVII Century. In the section dedicated to Holy Week in Córdoba, you will find a detailed description of the two images.
