Pillars Court

This space is situated in the north of the "Pool House". It is organized with openPillars Court Plan galleries with shouldered archs and on thick pillars. These galleries are around the court except in the southern side. In all the sides there are rooms. On south side, there is a street from the "Service Housing" - discussed before - in which runs a driving overall water supply. Latrines as in the "Upper Housing", is located in the eastern corner of the north side, preceded by a courtyard.
Every complex of rooms are communicated through entrance walls protected by horseshoe archs put on pillars. The northern and eastern rooms are wide and large andPillars Court are delimitated by little squared rooms. The court was wide and it was used for celebrations. In the western side the room are with white marble whereas the others are with purple limestone.
In the northern part, any room was not built, but a staircase was done. This one turned around a wall, of the type of the minaret. Through this staircase you could reach an upper terrace and under the northern part there was a passage that linked the most occidental part, and linked thePillars Court Abd al-Rahman’s private rooms.
The building of the "Pillars court" meant a big change in the structure of Madinat al-Zahra because there were two big buildings: one in the north and another in the south. Nowadays only remains the southern one, in particular, the small pool located in the center of its north side.
From the artistic point of view, is important to say that a Roman sarcophagi was found, located in the center of the courtyard and giving off the west side of the room. The sarcophagi was used as pool and it was in the middle of the court. It represented the hunting of Meleagro.
