Since the middle of the XIX Century, the interest for studying the Mosque-Cathedral increased, above all in the last decades of the century. Though, it is artistic related to relevant monuments, characteristic for its intense work, given to two architects: Ricardo Velázquez Bosco (1843-1923), born in Burgos, who restored some of the doors of the Mosque. His work was continued by Felix Hernández Giménez (1889-1975) born in Barcelona. This last one was during a lot of years the architect of the zone in the province of Córdoba, Jaén and Seville, where he performed a lot of andalusí architecture restorations (The Mosque, Madinat al-Zahra, the walls of Córdoba).
Besides he published an excellent book: The Alminar of Abd al-Rahman III in the Mosque (Granada, 1975).
Manuel Ocaña Jiménez (1914-1990) was born in Córdoba, helped the previously named architects with his arabic knowledge.
Recently, the investigation of two foreign institutions, set up in Spain, Madrid, have contributed to the development of the archaeological study of the Mosque.
The institutions are: The German Archaeological Institute and the Velázquez House. In the first institution it is memorable the task run by Christian Ewert, whose works are related to the History of Fine art and that have been focused on the decoration of the Mosque and Madinat al-Zahra.
For Madinat al-Zahra we have to remember Patrice Cressier. The last to be named is Pedro Marfil Ruiz, whose investigations show that the study of the Mosque hasn’t finished yet: investigation related to the surrounding of the Mosque.
The publications written about the Mosque-Cathedral are numerous but we will name the most important “tourist guides” of the Mosque Cathedral, we have to name those written by: José María Ortiz Suarez in 1975 or the one written by Dolores Baena Alcántara in 2006 (this one published in 2000, with her sister a text adapted for children); or the visual guide of the Mosque–Cathedral published by the Córdoba newspaper in 2001 with the texts of Pedro Marfil and photography by Manuel Pijuán Martínez.
With the title “The Mosque of Cordoba” a lot of works have been published: the precursor was Rafael Castejón and Martínez de Arizala (1893-1986), the Director of the Real Academy of Cordoba (1971, first edition); and the one by historian and arabist Manuel Salcines López (1923-2005), 1990; and the works run by the architects Fernando Chueca Goitia (1911-2004), published in 1968 and Alfonso Jiménez martin, in 1933.
With the title The Cathedral of Cordoba besides the previous study by Miguel Angel Ortí Belmonte (1970), can be named the works by Miguel Salcedo Hierro, and published in 1965 and 2000.
Other authors are: Manuel Nieto Cumplido, canon filer of the Cathedral and Alberto Villar Movellán, Professor of the University of History of Art of the University of Córdoba.
The first wrote the impressive book of The Cathedral of Cordoba (1998), you can admire The Mosque with its plans and drawings (1992) by Carlos Luca de Tena and Alvear, and The Mosque Cathedral of Córdoba: heritage of the humanity (2005) by Luis Recio Mateo.
The Second one published the Cathedral of Córdoba (1992), in which he studies the whole building (Cathedral and Mosque).
Moreover, Luis Recio Mateo, wrote The Cathedral of Cordoba (1992), and besides he run two works: the city of Cordoba. 2 Art. (1995) and Artistic guide of Cordoba and its province (2006), whose texts are written by María de los Ángeles Raya Raya and María Teresa Dabrio. They are the authors of the texts and also professors of the History of Art of the Faculty of Philosophy in Córdoba.
