Nuestra Señora de Andalucía

Oil and tempera on canvas
169 x 200 cm.

It is a tribute to the symbols of his region, Andalucia. For this reason he used as models to different character of the flamenco, such as the guitarist El chocolatero or the dancer la Cartulina, who curiously, after being the model for this work, she was killed by her husband because of the jealousy.
Julio Romero made a pyramidal composition, as a protagonist a woman which encloses the essence of the Andalusian tradition, flanked by two bowed women. On the right corner there is a self portrait of the artist and, as it was a triangle, the Chocolatero is put. In the background there is an idealized landscape of the city.
Oranges and Lemons

Julio Romero de Torres
(Córdoba, 1874 – Córdoba, 1930)
Oil and tempera on canvas
104 x 7 cm.
1927

As the previous case, we are in front a work of his maturity. In this case the model Asuncion Boue ,participated in it and in other works such as Celos or Salomé.
Julio Romero deals this kind of work as a still life, in a very personal way, giving, a standing out rolo to the woman. The model, topless, keeps different oranges and lemons in front of her breast, and she looks at the spectator firmly; the composition has itself a great erotic component.
As background, the artist chose a typical Cordovan courtyard, where the whiteness of the walls contrasts with the greenness of the pots and the tree that, precisely, is an orange tree.
La Chiquita Piconera

Julio Romero de Torres
(Córdoba, 1874 – Córdoba, 1930)
Oil and tempera on canvas
100 x 80 cm.
1930

It is considered as one of his most important masterpieces, it was performed a few days before dying, and carried to the Iberamerican Exposition in Seville.
Maria Teresa Lopez, the beautiful Cordovan model, is presented sat, looking directly to the spectator, putting her relaxed arms on her knees. At the bottom, through a window, there is a marvellous sunset in the Cordoban Rivera Riverside as if the author wanted to establish a parallelism with the end of his life.
Along the years the work has turned into a symbol, even it was represented on the five pesetas stamp by the Fabrica Nacional de moneda y Timbre (National Mint and Stamp).
