Main Courtyard in Viana Palace, Cordoba (Spain)

Main Court

Entering through the main entrance, from one of its vertexes, we arrive to Main Court or Recibo Planthe Main Courtyard, also called de Recibo. The patio has a trapeze shape, almost rectangular, surrounded by porched galleries in the lower part, that are shown by Roman arches on plain columns and toscani capitals. If we pay attention there is not a column that should be in the vertex from which we entered. This could be related to the fact that the carriages entered inside the enclosure. It was believed that in the second floor there was another porched gallery, where there are shouldered windows, painted in blue, reminding the ancient Muslim Córdoba. Main Court or Recibo
On both sides of the door, there are two tiles decorate with the inscriptions that remember the royal visits. One of them carried out by the king Alfonso XIII in 1921, and another by the Asturias Prince, accompanied by his brother, Don Jaime, who was guest of the palace during his first visit in 1927.
The vegetation is highly cared, standing out the tibias, filondreros, bougainvillae, and other common species, that give scent and freshness to the surroundings of the courtyard. In the middle there is a palm, surrounded by torcilago, clivia, and a Main Court or Reciboboj hedge whose height is higher than the roof of the house.
The floor is covered by stonework with dark and white stones, making a decoration full of dynamism. It was made in 1923, following the model of the one in the galleries, which was older.
In the courtyard and in the galleries a great number of archeologic pieces can be admired: capitals, bases, columns and till 50 pieces of rests are conserved in this patio. Even, there is a little gothic Virgin of the XIV century, situated in front of the main staircase, besides there is a bajorelieve that represents the Christ’s flagellation, both pieces are made in stone.
