Lounge of the Mosaic in Viana Palace, Cordoba (Spain)

Lounge of the Mosaic

In one of the corners of the Main Patio the doors are open and leads to the Lounge of the Mosaics, that receives the name because of a roman mosaic of the Lounge of the MosaicIV Century that we can find in the floor, found out, as the others rests situated into the palace, in the Llanos del Roldán, Moratalla, in Hornachuelos (Córdoba), being installed in this lounge in 1923 by Don José Saavedra y Salamanca Ramírez de Baquedano, the II Marquis of Viana.
It has a regular plan, which is covered by a simple but elegant vault, decorated with mouldings and gypsum rocks, from which a lamp is hanging with a little bulbs of the XVIII Century that give the lightness to the room. In the wall there is a painting, anonymous, painted on leather, that represents to Cleopatra on the day of Marcus Anthony's funeral. On the link side there is a weapons hanger of the XVII Century, embroidered in silver on red velvet. A great number of pieces, rustics, constitute the forniture of the lounge, as it is the sofa, the boot carved in wood, the four amchairs or the kitchen closet. Detail of Roman mosaic that decorates the lounge
Very interesting are the two armchairs of the XVI Century which are in the lounge. These armchairs were used on special occasions and by important persons, such as the ones related to the civil or religion life; a lot of people think that they were the previous chairs of the choir (in the Cathedral). These are very tough and austere, but the one in the corner has more innovative aspects, such as the carved shield in the back, framed into mouldings. The similar composition has a bank of the XVI Century, whose geometrical decoration has a mudejar shape, and it adds elegance to the place.
Two rose marble columns with Muslim basis and roman capitals flank the main entrance, which is communicated to the Lounge of the Signatures.
